Community Living Services
Adults with disabilities and their families are supported by SJCS in the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and West Tennessee to make choices regarding the communities in which they will live, the type of housing (i.e., group homes, apartments), and their housemates. Some of the individuals are former residents of institutions; others come to SJCS directly from their family homes. Regardless of the living arrangement, the residences belong to the individuals who live in them and not to the organization. Community resources are available to all residents, including public transportation, recreation facilities, public facilities and special events.
Individuals are encouraged to participate in the management and care of their homes and to participate in their community.
- Residents determine which skills they would like to acquire and what personal goals they are interested in achieving.
- Naturally occurring activities in each residence provide opportunities for individuals to acquire daily life skills, such as housekeeping, clothing care, menu planning, meal preparation, shopping, personal care, money management, functional academics, medication administration and social skills.
- Residents may also choose to participate in SJCS Community Participation and/or Employment Services or similar services from other providers.
The ultimate goal is for people with disabilities to live, participate and work in the least restrictive environment of their choice and to gain skills to further their level of independence.
While the concepts of choice and self-determination are the driving force, the health and safety of the residents is of the upmost importance. SJCS staff are highly trained and available on a 24-hour to a drop-in basis to make sure that each individual is appropriately supported as they move toward greater independence. The amount of staff support provided is determined by individual assessment and in consultation with the individual, his or her family members, and other members of the individual’s support team.
As part of Community Living Services, SJCS-VA also supports adults with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities, who require various levels of support to live in their natural home environments and actively participate in the community. (SJCS-TN provides the services on a limited basis.) These In-Home Support Services include drop-in or friendly-visitor counseling to more intensive support, monitoring and training. Services are based on the needs of the participant and are provided on a one-to-one staff ratio so that each participant receives maximum individualized service.
