Community Participation Services
SJCS Community Participation Services in the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia area), Northern Virginia and West Tennessee is consistent with our concept of self-direction and unlike many more traditional adult day services is a “program without walls.” Person Centered Planning, emphasizing individual wants, needs, and desires, guides the services developed for each individual. People with disabilities become involved in their communities by developing relationships, skills, abilities and an improved sense of personal value. Staff in all SJCS state locations supports individuals to:
· learn new skills through community activities such as shopping, banking, and using library services;
· gain cultural experiences through visits to museums, sporting events, and community activities; and
· form relationships through shared interests in art, writing, computer technology, religion, and culture.
The program also serves seniors with disabilities, often within existing programs (e.g., senior centers) designed to support typically aging adults.
Participants can also choose to volunteer in the community while building a resume for future employment or as a retirement option for those who no longer choose to work. SJCS has established a network of nonprofit volunteer sites at which individuals can choose to donate their time doing activities such as bagging food for home-bound individuals, folding laundry for maternity wards at local hospitals, and visiting nursing home patients. Through volunteer activities, participants gain cognitive, social, communication and motor skills, develop relationships with people without disabilities, meet personal goals, and gain self-esteem by helping others. All volunteer activities are supervised by a trained SJCS staff member in cooperation with the assigned nonprofit agency supervisor.
As part of Community Participation, SJCS-DC provides Home-Based Services for individuals who may be medically fragile and behaviorally challenged requiring support at home. The services are individualized, based on the changing needs of individuals throughout their lifetime and supported by highly trained clinical and support staff.
